Hot Tub Removal: How a 600-Pound Spa Actually Comes Out

The Hot Tub Problem

A standard residential hot tub weighs 500-900 pounds dry and 3,500-4,500 pounds full of water. Even drained, moving one is a four-person job, and most homeowners only realize this after spending an afternoon trying to lever it onto a dolly. We get the call right around that moment. Hot tubs sit at the intersection of three categories of removal work: water and electrical (need to be disconnected), heavy lift (need crew and equipment), and oversized debris (does not fit in a residential trash service).

Before We Arrive: Drain and Disconnect

Two things to handle before our truck rolls up. First: drain the tub. If your hot tub still has water, use the drain plug or a sump pump. Run the water out into the yard or a storm drain, most jurisdictions allow drained hot tub water as long as it is not heavily chemically treated. Second: disconnect the electrical. Hot tubs run on 220V circuits and the disconnect should be flipped at the breaker before we touch the unit. Disassembly vs. Single-Piece Haul

There are two ways to get a hot tub out: drag it whole on rollers, or cut it apart on-site. Whole removal works only when the path to the truck is wide enough (typically 36 inches minimum) and there are no stairs or 90-degree turns. About half our hot tub jobs require on-site disassembly. We bring a reciprocating saw and cut the shell into manageable pieces, separating the acrylic, the steel frame, the wiring, and the foam insulation. This adds time (typically 30-60 extra minutes) but it is often the only option for tubs on second-story decks or in tight backyards.

What We Take

All of it. Acrylic shell, fiberglass insulation, foam jackets, the steel skirt and frame, the pump and heater, wiring harness, control panel, cover. Anything reusable goes through our donation chain (occasionally a salvageable pump or control board); the rest goes through metal recycling for the steel and landfill for the acrylic and foam.

Pricing Hot Tub Jobs

Hot tub removal is typically a half-load ($520) to full-truck ($725) job depending on size and disassembly requirements. A small 4-person backyard hot tub is usually the half-load price. A 7-person therapy spa with surround decking that has to come out too is full-truck territory.
