"Eco-friendly junk removal" gets used a lot in marketing. It's worth being specific about what it actually means, because the answer varies more than most companies admit. Some companies haul everything to the landfill and call themselves green. Others have real processes for sorting, donating, and recycling.
Here's exactly what happens to different types of items when Southside Junk Removal picks them up, and where we're honest about our limitations.
Furniture: What Gets Donated vs. What Doesn't
Furniture in good condition gets offered to local donation partners before anything else. In metro Atlanta, working relationships with organizations like Goodwill of North Georgia and Habitat for Humanity ReStores in the metro area allow furniture to stay in circulation and out of the landfill.
The honest part: not all furniture is donable. Sofas with stains, broken frames, pet damage, or age-related deterioration typically get rejected by donation centers. Donation organizations have limited space and they maintain quality standards. If a piece doesn't meet those standards, it goes to the landfill. We don't donate items that will just get thrown away by the receiving organization, because that's not actually better for the environment.
What this means for you: if you have furniture in solid condition, let us know. We'll flag it for donation consideration. If it's worn out, expect it to go to disposal.
Electronics: Certified E-Waste Recycling
Electronics are handled separately from general waste, full stop. Televisions, computers, monitors, printers, phones, and other electronics contain materials, including lead, mercury, cadmium, and lithium, that cannot safely go into a standard landfill.
We route all electronics to certified e-waste recyclers who break down the materials properly. Circuit boards get processed for rare materials. Screens are handled to prevent mercury leaching. Batteries are separated and processed through appropriate channels.
Georgia does not have a mandatory e-waste recycling law for consumers as of 2024, but responsible disposal is the right call regardless. The Georgia Environmental Protection Division provides guidance on responsible electronics disposal for residents who want to handle it themselves.
Appliances: Mostly Recycled
Appliances are primarily metal, which is highly recyclable. Washers, dryers, ovens, ranges, and similar items go to scrap metal processors. The steel, aluminum, and copper inside get melted down and reused.
The exception is appliances containing refrigerants, specifically refrigerators, freezers, window AC units, and dehumidifiers. These require that the refrigerant be properly vented before the appliance goes to scrap. The EPA's Section 608 regulations govern refrigerant handling, and we comply with those requirements. The refrigerant is recovered and the remaining metal goes to recycling.
Water heaters and other large non-refrigerant appliances go directly to scrap.
Yard Debris: Compost and Mulch
Yard debris, including branches, brush, leaves, and natural organic material, goes to composting or mulch processing facilities where available. This keeps organic material out of the landfill and puts it back into productive use.
Treated lumber and composite materials from fencing or decking are a different category. These often contain preservatives or binders that disqualify them from composting and they typically go to the landfill.
General Household Junk: Honest About the Landfill
Some things end up in the landfill. Broken plastic items, worn-out household goods, mixed materials that can't be separated efficiently, and anything that doesn't fit a donation or recycling stream goes to disposal.
We don't want to overstate this. A professional junk removal service that sorts carefully will divert more from the landfill than a single person hauling everything in a rented truck and dumping it all in one spot. But we're not recycling 100% of what we pick up, and any company claiming that is overstating.
